Catalyst Synthesis: Build The Structure You Intend To Use

Published research · Doctoral dissertation, 2021

What the public work establishes

Can preparation preserve the intended metal-site structure?

Research evidence

The dissertation studies solvent and chelation routes for limiting precursor agglomeration and producing supported single-atom catalysts.

The development boundary

A synthesis method still needs a repeatable preparation window, quality checks, and application testing before a production decision.

The question

A catalyst concept depends on the sites that synthesis actually produces. How can preparation preserve isolated metal centers on a solid support?

How to read the evidence

My dissertation examines supported single-atom catalysts and two preparation routes: switched solvent synthesis and chelate fixation. The research connects precursor handling during drying and activation with the resulting metal distribution.

  1. Define the intended metal-site structure and support
  2. Examine how solvent and precursor treatment affect agglomeration
  3. Use characterization to test whether the intended structure was obtained
  4. Separate synthesis evidence from the repeatability and process controls needed for production

The next useful decision

The next development decision is what must be controlled and measured when preparation is repeated: precursor condition, drying and activation, site structure, and variation between batches. These are development questions, not a claim of a delivered production line.
